Q&As

How/Why did you first become interested in medical cannabis?

After a bicycle accident in 11/2014 I was introduced to CBD at my chiropractor's office which worked! I began researching everything in library books and PubMed - and I was shocked that in 30 years in medicine that I never heard of the ECS + Cannabinoids. In 2015 I got involved in San Diego Cannabis and built Holistic Caring to serve medical patients. Networking with local palliative care physicians allowed me to learn and apply my new skills, discovering how cannabinoids are pleiotropic workhorses that benefit all conditions.

What is your background in medical cannabis?

Elisabeth founded Holistic Caring in 2015 to bridge the gap between traditional and cannabis medicine through education, guidance, and supportive care for patients. An educational provider for the California Board of Registered Nursing, she professionalizes medical cannabis by equipping healthcare providers to have necessary conversations with patients and to approach cannabis by emphasizing holistic and functional medicine. Her background includes a decade working in hospitals where she specialized in psychiatry, diabetes and medical units. Prior to starting Holistic Caring, Elisabeth spent 20 years in operations and sales management of several health insurance carriers (RSM of Anthem Blue Cross). She believes cannabinoid medicines offer a chance at healing, comfort and wholeness in a more holistic, economical and empowering way. Elisabeth earned her MBA in Healthcare Administration, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She is a member of the Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine (AIHM), the Society of Cannabis Clinicians, served as Treasurer of the American Cannabis Nurses Association (ACNA), and is a current Board Member of Los Angeles NORML, and the Coachella Valley Cannabis Alliance Network (CVCAN).

What are you currently working on professionally? Personally?

My vision includes an Ecosystem to deliver a comprehensive training curriculum for nurses, targeted e-learning modules, Nurse Line services for triage, 1:1 Coaching for patients and caregivers, and a vetted marketplace for nationwide CBD & referrals to local THC products. I spent 20 years inside health plans, and this vision = a Cannabis HMO. We're developing our 501c3 non-profit to fund free Nurse Line services, free 1:1 Coaching, free cancer care items not covered by insurance, and free scholarships for nurses to pursue our programs. Our partners are developing cashless payment systems for a national dispensary network, and we're creating disease management programs for health plans. I envision Patient Centered Care that brings health and wholeness to our world with Plant Medicines! Personally, Sherri & I merged our companies in 2021, married 11/11/22, and are celebrating our first wedding anniversary in Cabo! When we're not working, we are active at church, enjoy the club, gym, pools, hiking, and exploring wonderful spots in Palm Springs CA.

What attracted you to the SCC and/or what do you enjoy most about this community?

I found SCC in 2015 as I began my formal education with the TMCI programs, and I joined as a member in 2016. I enjoyed meeting many SCC members in 2016 at an Oaksterdam meeting, and have attended many remote sessions since. SCC provides the education, networking, and easy to use platform to connect with allies around the world. The 2023 conference in Los Angeles was incredible in content and connection, and I'm eager to participate in more live events as we begin to map out 2024.

What are your hopes for the future of cannabis medicine?

My hope lies in building the Medical Door to Cannabis in America, and getting stakeholders to agree on 2 doors - Adult Use & Medical Use. There needs to be a clinical system to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and adjust cannabinoids to optimize dosing to meet defined healthcare outcomes. Conventional and Cannabis Clinicians must begin to connect and collaborate on treatment plans with transparency and understanding of all sides. Finally the payers must come to the table to contribute employer dollars, HSA funds, and innovative ways to finance cannabinoid care as the largest barriers remain access and affordability.

Are there any fun facts about yourself that you would like to share?

I love nature and the outdoors as it inspires me to engineer my own solutions to life. There is power in the Universe, and I spend a lot of time in prayer and meditation to help me find the answers I need to be a better healer and developer in this crazy world.
